A Funeral for Hate

On Sunday, military leaders within the Arab region together with thousands of civilians mourned the death and attended the funeral of Hassan Nasrallah, the previous leader of the terrorist organisation Hezbollah. Dressed in black; with yellow scarves draped around their necks, ordinary folk from Lebanon and from who else knows where, mourned the loss of a leader who was responsible for the deaths of thousands of innocent civilians.

One of the many things that stands out from this is that much of the Arab world has evidently succumbed to the indoctrination and propaganda of the state-controlled media machine of Lebanon, Syria, Iran and countless others that promote anti-semitism and vehement opposition towards Jews and the existence of Israel. Yet, many from the crowds on Sunday can be seen teary-eyed and blandishing flags bearing the face of Nasrallah. Before we go any further it’s worth mentioning some of the atrocities that Nasrallah is responsible for.

In 1983, Nasrallah is reported to have been involved with the bombing of the United States Embassy and marine barracks in Beirut which killed over 300 people. In 1992, Hezbollah carried out the bombing of the Israeli Embassy in Buenos Aires, killing 29, and the 1994 attack on a Jewish community center in Argentina, killing 85. In 2006, after Hezbollah captured two Jewish soldiers, the 34-day war started between Lebanon and Israel in which over a thousand Lebanese men and women were killed and millions were displaced. Furthermore, he has assisted the recently deposed Al-Assad regime in Iran by deploying Hezbollah fighters there in 2013 during the civil war. Aside from this, he has promoted and lauded Holocaust deniers, called for the destruction of Israel and pushed vehement xenophobia against inhabitants of the nation. That’s without mentioning his clear partnership with Hamas before and following the atrocities of October 7th 2023.

This crushes the myth that all cultures are the same and that really, there are just bad apples here and there within them. When thousands of ordinary citizens of any country descend upon an open-air stadium to show respect and admiration for a leader who has done the things aforementioned, it’s clear that there is in fact, some good cultures and some bad ones.

To the dismay of mourners, the event was somewhat hijacked by the Israel Defence Force’s flying of low-altitude F-15 and F-35’s over the stadium which provoked a strong image of brazen military action in Israel, reinforcing their idea of airspace dominance within the region. In fact, the funeral had to be rescheduled numerous times due to potential security threats.

It’s also important to remember what happens when you put feelings, in the case of the worshipping of genocidal Arab leaders, before facts: people die. Despite what the residents of the rest of the Arab world have been fed about Jews and the state of Israel, aiming to wipe them out will in fact, result in more death of their people on both sides.

More crucially, it’s worth noting that the massacre on October 7th, the event that provoked the determined reaction from Israeli forces, wasn’t just carried out by Hamas - regular Palestinian folk crossed the border of Israel and began pillaging and committing savage acts of repulsive description. According to an Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) assessment, around 6,000 Gazans breached the border at 119 locations, with an estimated 3,800 being Hamas’s "elite Nukhba forces" and other militants, leaving approximately 2,200 identified as civilians or other non-affiliated individuals. This indicates the nature of the culture inside of Palestine. Despite what the mass media might have told you, many Palestinians want the wipe out of Israel and with it, the genocide of nearly 10 million people.

So instead of deifying a nation’s leader, disregarding genuine facts or care for other populations, the Palestinian, Lebanese and surrounding populations should actually take a look at the facts, because buying into the ‘Death to all Jews’ sentiment will result in more tragedy for - both sides.
