Unsilencing the Majority
People are waking up. It’s happening/been happening slowly over the past two decades or so. Typically, authors, columnists, content creators, “influencers” - if you will - prey on the latest bout of execrably dispiriting news that they can use as ammunition to fuel their latest post online. This piece cuts a slightly different jib.
We’ve seen governments come and go in His Majesty’s dominion, as we’ve seen issues that actually matter become sidelined for other nonsense. And people recognise this. A YouGov poll last month found that 73% of Brits believe that the levels of immigration over the past ten years have been too high. So Keir Starmer (although it almost definitely isn’t him writing his own tweets, or X’s?), has been getting tough on the issue…
Of course, just like the previous "Conservative" party government, it’s just words. I do sympathise for Starmer though; he inherited an absolutely revolting situation from the Tories last year, hence his hands were tied: "tough decisions" had to be made. Of course, tough decisions that he went back on, but tough decisions nonetheless. But like I said, this is meant to be about "Unsilencing the Majority", which is exactly what's happening across the country.
It's sort of like that scene in Jurassic Park where the velociraptor learns to open the door to the kitchen. This time though, the 'raptors are people and they're unlocking the door to something completely different. As we're observing once again, history repeats itself. Whenever you shut a citizenry up for long enough with enough force and willpower, you'll get an equally matched, or in most cases, much more profound response back.
It is odd though, to completely ignore the whims of the citizenry over which you govern. Sure, it would be a tactful pander from the Labour Party to focus efforts on the issue, but so what? Starmer's personal popularity stinks as does his government's. It would make sense to at least try given their bleak re-election hopes.
Anyway, watch this space: more protests are coming over the next few months that's for sure.
